Today it\u2019s capturing media attention once again, as the subject of Victoria Hislop\u2019s new novel, \u201cThe Sunrise,\u201d which will be released in Greece on October 22.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I was writing my book I felt as if my fingers were wet and I was putting them in the power socket. I felt like the subject was as fresh as it was 40 years ago, like not a day has gone past,\u201d she said in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philenews.com\/el-gr\/politismos-anthropoi\/389\/219531\/victoria-hislop-itan-san-na-evaza-vregmena-cheria-stin-priza\" target=\"_blank\">a recent interview<\/a> with the Greek newspaper \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.philenews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span lang=\"el\" xml:lang=\"el\">\u1f49 \u03a6\u03b9\u03bb\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03cd\u03b8\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2<\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5979\" src=\"\/\/www.victoriahislop.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/socket.png\" alt=\"socket\" width=\"687\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victoriahislop.co.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/socket.png 687w, https:\/\/www.victoriahislop.co.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/socket-250x94.png 250w, https:\/\/www.victoriahislop.co.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/socket-500x189.png 500w, https:\/\/www.victoriahislop.co.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/socket-600x226.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 687px) 100vw, 687px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hislop\u2019s literary inspiration came from\u00a0the town\u2019s empty buildings.\u00a0\u201cThe Sunrise\u201d marks\u00a0the first time she has written about a city that she could not even explore, she told \u201cFileleftheros.\u201d \u201cI traveled to Cyprus many times, I visited Famagusta, stood near the wire and watched the city. I spent some time on the roof of the Turkish-Cypriot mayor\u2019s office in Famagusta and tried to gather as many images as I could.\u201d Ankara denied her request to enter the city\u2019s cordoned off sections.<\/p>\n<p>The author first visited Famagusta in 1978 at the age of 18. \u201cI was travelling by bus. I started from London, went through several former socialist countries and ended up in Turkey. There we took a boat and went to Kyrenia, if I\u2019m not mistaken. For three weeks I was camping. Although it was a carefree trip, it was also very strange. I was looking at a hotel in Famagusta, which looked like a resort, surrounded by beautiful beaches, yet I could not go near it.
